  iD.Allstars - Frühwerk

  English: When we drifted off into a wonderfully nostalgic retro-mood during our recent iD.EOLOGY coffee-party, we thought back with warm hearts to the starting-phase of our splendid little label. Even though during those more than five years throughout which we now have enhanced your everyday-lives with neat free music, our portfolio has grown considerably, we would never made it to this point without the artists who have supplied us with fine tracks from the very beginning.

  So in order to give a little thankyou to these artists as well as to give you some proof that many may have started out small but some have done so pretty big, we gather some of the iD.EOLOGY artists of the first hour on this compilation which also initiates a new small but nice series. And since a nostalgic retro-mood is currently ace, they contribute not their latest tracks but rather some hardly or even not known works from their impetuous early creative periods.

  And so we realise with amazement that Cuebism has always been about funk but not always about disco, that Oddjob is not just capable of producing intricate ambient but also some buttkicking beats, that for once Yakitorih did actually manage to get a track finished, that the chairman of our d'n'b fraction Elliptic used to rock the shack with freaky house-tracks, that a fidgety breakbeat can actually fit into the clockwork of Sudio's techdub-tracks, that Slomo likes to ogle with dub from time to time and that Projektohr can come up with a fine mastering-job just as well as with easy-going electro.

  Geez, isn't it nice to see how it all developed from there? Another cup, anyone?

  
  Deutsch: Als beim iD.EOLOGY Kaffeekranz kürzlich eine wunderbar nostalgische Retrostimmung aufkam, dachten wir mit einer gewissen Rührung an die Anfangsphase unseres famosen kleinen Labels zurück. Auch wenn während der mittlerweile mehr als fünf Jahre, in denen wir Euren Alltag mit schmucker Gratismusik verschönert haben, unser Portfolio beachtlich gewachsen ist, so hätten wir es ohne diejenigen Künstler, die uns seit unserem Beginn mit feinsten Tracks versorgt haben, sicherlich niemals bis hierher geschafft.

  Ebenso als kleines Dankeschön an diese Künstler, wie auch als Beweis an Euch, dass viele mal klein, einige aber auch ziemlich groß angefangen haben, versammeln wir auf dieser Compilation einige iD. Allstars der ersten Stunde und eröffnen damit zugleich unsere neue, kleine aber feine iD.classics Reihe. Und da nostalgische Retrostimmung gerade Trumpf ist, steuern unsere Künstler nicht etwa ihre neusten Kreationen, sondern bislang wenig bis gar nicht bekannte Werke aus ihrer ungestümen frühen Schaffensperiode bei.

  Und so stellen wir mit Verwunderung fest, dass es bei Cuebism zwar immer schon um Funk, aber nicht immer schon um Disco ging, dass Oddjob keineswegs nur versponnenes Ambient, sondern auch arschtretende Beats zustande bringt, dass Yakitorih tatsächlich auch mal einen Track fertig bekommen haben, dass der Vorsitzende unserer D'n'B Fraktion Elliptic früher auch gern mal mit ausgeflippten Housetracks die Bude rocken liess, dass sich in das Uhrwerk von Sudios Techdub-Tracks auch mal ein zappeliger Breakbeat einfügen kann, dass Slomo ab und an mit Dub liebäugelt, und dass Projektohr nicht nur ein ausgefeiltes Mastering, sondern auch herrlich beschwingten Electro machen kann.

  Hach ja, schön zu sehen, wie sich das alles seit damals so entwickelt hat. Noch jemand Käffchen?

  iD.Allstars - re-iD.d 2

  English: Identity is a bit of an issue. What one perceives as one's own identity is not necessarily always identical with what others perceive as such. So at least partially, identity is being created by the interaction of individuals.

  Pretty much the same is true for the artistic identities on this compilation. While on the debut compilation our iD. allstars were busy flashing their own artistic identities based on tracks by other iD.EOLOGY artists, they now do quite the opposite thing: they are flashing the tracks of other iD.EOLOGY artists based on their own artistic identites.

  And so Dub One!, Zengineers and Backwater Planet, Gringo Starr as well as Retrogott and Mariama, Das Timbo and Glander highlight the tracks by Slomo, Zengineers, Authist & Dub One, Disrupt, Gringo Starr and Fleur Earth, rather than subjecting them to the strict rule of their own artistic identities. Advantgarde pop still is avantgarde pop, just a shovelful more earthy. Downbeat still is downbeat, just a thumbprint more psychedelic. Hiphop still is hiphop, just a few Hertz more electronic.

  To one or another of the artists involved this may mean interesting news about their artistic identities. To us it certainly means another individual iD. release. And to you, it is most definitely identical with a good half hour worth of damn good entertainment.

  
  Deutsch: Mit der Identität ist das so eine Sache. Nicht immer ist das, was man selbst als die eigene Identität wahrnimmt, auch identisch mit dem, was andere wahrnehmen. Zumindest zum Teil entsteht Identität also auch aus der Wechselwirkung zwischen verschiedenen Individuen.

  Ganz ähnlich verhält es sich auch mit den künstlerischen Identitäten auf dieser Compilation. Während unsere iD. Allstars auf der Erstlingscompilation noch im Wesentlichen damit beschäftigt waren, die eigene künstlerische Identität auf der Grundlage von Tracks anderer iD.EOLOGY Künstler herauszustellen, machen Sie nun eher Gegenteiliges: auf Grundlage der eigenen künstlerischen Identität stellen sie Tracks anderer iD.EOLOGY Künstler heraus.

  Und so unterstreichen Dub One!, Zengineers und Backwater Planet, Gringo Starr sowie Retrogott und Mariama, Das Timbo und Glander eher die Tracks von Slomo, Zengineers, Authist & Dub One!, Disrupt, Gringo Starr und Fleur Earth, als dass sie diese dem strikten Diktat ihrer eigenen künstlerischen Identität unterwerfen. Advantgarde Pop bleibt Avantgarde Pop, nur eine Schippe erdiger. Downbeat bleibt Downbeat, nur eine Pappe psychedelischer. Hiphop bleibt Hiphop, nur ein paar Hertz elektronischer.

  Für den einen oder anderen beteiligten Künstler mag das Aufschlussreiches über die eigene künstlerische Identität bedeuten. Für uns bedeutet es jedenfalls eine weitere individuelle iD. Veröffentlichung. Und für Euch ist es sicherlich identisch mit einer guten halben Stunde verdammt guter Unterhaltung.

  Michael Hoffmann - Luminous EP

  English: If you can trust Brian Eno, then ambient has the capacity to put the listener into a different, not necessarily existent environment just by the use of sound, and to acoustically confront him with new sensations of space.

  Even though carrying on with this tradition, Michael Hoffmann breaks some more modern ground soundwise on his first solo-ep on iD.EOLOGY. Minimalist is how he goes about when bit by bit, the penumbral monstrous steel-construction of an abandoned industrial ruin appears in the mechanical monotony of resonating feedback-loops and stolid muffled beats. Debris of clanging metal and crumbly noise cover the ground, the walls of the corroded workshop answer each step with a multiple echo. Very slowly a harmonic crescendo illuminates the room, bathing it in the sunny glow of warm, comforting pads and touching it with the soft summer breeze of glittering arpeggios.

  What you are normally likely to encounter during an arts-performance, is what this ep achieves solely by means of sound. So creating and changing environments, generating and conveying new sensations of space is possible in a different way. But who would ever have doubted that you can trust Brian Eno.

  
  Deutsch: Wenn man Brian Eno Glauben schenken darf, dann ermöglicht es Ambient, den Hörer allein durch Klänge in eine andere, nicht notwendigerweise tatsächlich existente Umgebung zu versetzen und ihn akustisch mit einem neuen Raumgefühl zu konfrontieren.

  Ganz in dieser Tradition verhaftet, beschreitet Michael Hoffmann auf seiner ersten Solo-EP auf iD.EOLOGY soundtechnisch dennoch modernere Pfade. Minimalistisch geht es zu, wenn in der mechanischen Monotonie resonierender Feedbackschleifen und schwerfälliger Mumpfbeats Stück für Stück die monströse Stahlkonstruktion einer verlassenen Industrieruine im Halbdunkel erscheint. Trümmerteile aus metallischem Schnarren und krümeligem Noise bedecken den Boden, die Wände der verrosteten Werkshalle beantworten jeden Schritt mit einem vielfachen Echo. Ganz langsam läßt ein harmonisches Crescendo den Raum erstrahlen, taucht ihn in das sonnige Leuchten wohlig wärmender Flächen und durchweht ihn mit der spätsommerlichen Brise glitzernder Arpeggios.

  Was man sonst eher auf einer Kunstperformance erlebt, das erledigt diese EP auf rein akustischem Weg. Umgebungen zu erschaffen und zu verändern, neue räumliche Eindrücke zu erzeugen und zu vermitteln geht also tatsächlich auch anders. Aber wer hätte je daran gezweifelt, dass man Brian Eno Glauben schenken darf.
